{"id":2122,"date":"2023-08-18T11:43:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-18T08:43:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=2122"},"modified":"2026-03-10T12:05:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T12:05:06","slug":"swiss-mp-demands-release-of-former-belapan-ceo-navazylau","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/2122\/","title":{"rendered":"Swiss MP demands release of former BelaPAN CEO Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>August 18,&nbsp;<em>BPN<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/strong>Violations of the freedom of expression by the state represent a clear human rights abuse, Swiss MP Min Li Marti has told BPN two years after&nbsp;police raided the&nbsp;<em>BelaPAN<\/em>&nbsp;media company and arrested its editor in chief Iryna Le\u016d\u0161yna and former CEO D\u017amitryj Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A professional journalist herself, Marti took on a symbolic godparenthood of Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d as a part of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.libereco.org\/en\/belarus-gefangene-patenschaften-prisoners-godparenthood\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">#WeStandBYyou<\/a>, a solidarity campaign launched by the Libereco human rights group.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She urged Belarusian authorities to immediately release Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d and respect freedom of expression. The MP stressed her respect for those who defend democracy and human rights even in such unfavorable conditions, as in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In October 2022, judge Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Tulejka of the Minsk Regional Court sentenced Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d to six years in prison and a fine of 22,400 rubels (some $8,900) on charges of tax evasion and extremism. Human rights defenders denounced the charges as a politically-motivated drive to silence critical voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d is held at Penal Colony No 3 in Vi\u0107ba, Viciebsk district, and works at the sewing shop. He turned 51 on August 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>German MP Merle Spellerberg, Le\u016d\u0161yna\u2019s symbolic godmother, also plans to issue a statement, her office told&nbsp;<em>BPN<\/em>. The journalist is currently serving a four-year prison term at Penal Colony No 4 in Homiel and works at the sewing shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another defendant in the&nbsp;<em>BelaPAN<\/em>&nbsp;case, former deputy CEO Andrej Alaksandra\u016d, was given 14 years in prison and his wife Iryna Z\u0142obina, nine years.
