{"id":2456,"date":"2023-08-23T23:21:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T20:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=2456"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"belarus-sees-sharp-drop-in-money-transfers-from-abroad","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/2456\/","title":{"rendered":"Belarus sees sharp drop in money transfers from abroad"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>August 23,&nbsp;<em>BPN.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;Belarus received $81.3 million in remittances from abroad in the first six months of 2023, a 57- percent drop from the same period last year, according to the country&#8217;s central bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The data, released yesterday, covers transfers made through international systems such as Unistream, Zolotaya Korona, Sberbank Online, MoneyGram and Contact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The amount of money sent from Belarus to other countries also decreased by 47 percent, from $118.9 million in January-June 2022 to $63.5 million in the same period this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decline in remittances coincided with the suspension of operations by Western Union, a major US money transfer group, in Belarus and Russia in March 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus has been experiencing a wave of emigration since August 2020, when a disputed presidential election resulted in mass protests and an unprecedented crackdown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remittances from abroad had been growing steadily until the second half of 2022, reaching a peak of $187.6 million in the first half of that year.
