{"id":2475,"date":"2023-08-23T12:27:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-23T09:27:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=2475"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"illegal-belarus-eu-border-crossings-soar-to-208-in-24-hours-2","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/2475\/","title":{"rendered":"Illegal Belarus-EU border crossings soar to 208 in 24 hours"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>August 23,&nbsp;<em>BPN<\/em>.&nbsp;<\/strong>The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 208 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/vsat.lrv.lt\/lt\/naujienos\/neileistu-neteisetu-migrantu-statistika\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">recorded<\/a>&nbsp;five illegal attempts to cross the border on August 22, while their Latvian colleagues thwarted 143 attempts, a record high since the start of 2023.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Polish Border Guard&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Straz_Graniczna\/status\/1694246161786323067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a>&nbsp;that 60 foreigners, including nationals of Afghanistan, Somalia and Ethiopia, tried to illegally enter from Belarus. A group of some 20 illegal migrants assaulted Polish border guards, reportedly throwing stones, using slingshots and aiming at the patrol with a rifle. Border guards said a service vehicle was damaged.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the start of 2023, the EU has recorded at least 27,669 attempts by illegal migrants to enter its territory from Belarus, with 19,812 attempts via Poland, 6,296 via Latvia and 1,561 via Lithuania. Illegal migrants attempted to cross the Belarusian-EU border as many as 3,395 times in August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BPN&#8217;s analysis of daily stats indicated growing tension at the Belarusian-EU border, with Poland being the prime target. Illegal border crossing attempts rose from 1,989 in January and 1,970 in February to 3,701 in June and 5,054 in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border dates back to the spring of 2021. It escalated in November 2021, with thousands of migrants setting up a camp near the Polish border. The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Migration figures had dropped significantly by the time Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but have risen more recently.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>August 23,&nbsp;BPN.&nbsp;The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 208 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day.&nbsp;
