August 22, BPN.<\/em><\/strong> Eight allies of the European Union have joined its latest package of sanctions against Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka’s regime, the EU’s top diplomat said in a statement<\/a> yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Josep Borrell said five candidates for EU membership \u2013 Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia and Ukraine \u2013 supported the measures adopted on August 3. European Economic Area members Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway also joined the team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In mid-August, Switzerland said it had aligned itself with the new sanction package a few weeks earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The EU sped up the new restrictive measures against Minsk “in view of the urgency linked to the fight against circumvention regarding certain highly sensitive goods and technologies.” They “expand the ban on exports to Belarus of a number of highly sensitive goods and technologies which contribute to Belarus’ military and technological enhancement.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sanctions target 38 people, including judges, police officials and propagandists, and three companies, namely the Minsk Electrotechnical Plant, the Belarusian Steel Works and the oil and petrochemical giant Bie\u0142naftachim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United Kingdom later imposed sanctions against six Belarusian companies that it said were of strategic importance for the country and supported Russia’s war against Ukraine, and the United States expanded its own sanction list.
