September 20,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Belarus’ opposition leader has met with a senior US diplomat to discuss ways to secure the release of political prisoners and US strategy with regard to her country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja, who fled Belarus after running against authoritarian leader Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, told  Uzra Zeya, under secretary of state for civilian security, democracy and human rights, that the release of all political prisoners is an absolute priority and requires a bold policy, said the Belarusian politician’s press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She called on Washington to support programs of assistance to former political prisoners and suggested establishing a fund for victims and their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Cichano\u016dskaja’s office, Zeya said that the United States will continue to support Belarusian democratic forces and work for the release of all political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington will also support an effort to collect evidence of the \u0141uka\u0161enka government’s “crimes against humanity” and involvement in the deportation of Ukrainian children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja updated Zeya on the trial of Juryj Hara\u016dski, a former member of the Belarusian interior ministry’s Special Rapid Response Unit. The hearings in Switzerland can set off a series of trials against \u0141uka\u0161enka’s accomplices around the world, the office said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They also talked about \u0141uka\u0161enka’s recent move to limit consular services for Belarusian emigrants. Cichano\u016dskaja said it may affect up to half a million people. A solution could be simpler migration rules for Belarusians in European countries and the issue of alternative Belarusian passports, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja and Zeya also discussed the strategic dialogue to be launched in December 2023 to foster a lasting partnership between the United States and Belarusian democratic forces and cement Belarusian independence, according to the Belarusian politician’s press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cichano\u016dskaja, who is visiting the United States from September 17 to 23, has already had a number of high-profile meetings there, including with Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei, Microsoft Vice President Teresa Hutson, top diplomats from the Netherlands and Finland and Beth Van Schaack, the US ambassador-at-large for global criminal justice.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
