September 21,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Accusations of Belarusian complicity in Russia’s war on Ukraine are “completely absurd,” Foreign Minister Siarhiej Alejnik told the UN Security Council meeting on September 20.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat noted that Belarus hosted three rounds of Russian-Ukrainian peace talks at the early stage of the war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All Belarusian initiatives to reduce confrontation remained unanswered and the conflict in Ukraine flared up with a new force, while the entire world is suffering consequences as economic, food and energy crises deepened, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Belarus, a neighboring country of Ukraine, is more interested than anyone else in resolving this conflict,” the foreign ministry’s press office quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The implementation of the Minsk agreements could have directed the peace talks “on a sustainable positive” path, yet it did not happen, Alejnik said. He also claimed that some of his Western counterparts did not plan to end the conflict and wanted to carry on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since March 2022, Belarus has accepted about 120,000 Ukrainian refugees fleeing the war, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat reaffirmed Belarus’ intention to secure long-term and sustainable peace in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Minsk focuses on promoting a “consolidating and creative agenda” emphasizing the “peaceful nature” of its priorities at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly, according to the foreign ministry. Its delegation is visiting New York from September 19 to 24.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja is also visiting the United States around the same time for UN General Assembly side events and high-level meetings with Western politicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In February 2022, Russia started a full-scale war against Ukraine. Authorities in Minsk denied the Belarusian army\u2019s involvement in combat operations but allowed Russian troops to attack Ukraine from Belarus on multiple occasions and have persecuted Belarusians for an antiwar position.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
