September 27,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0Belarusian Foreign Minister Siarhiej Alejnik\u00a0told<\/a>\u00a0AP<\/em>\u00a0that he cannot imagine a situation in which Belarus could enter the war in Ukraine to fight alongside with Russian troops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime has supported the Russian invasion of Ukraine by providing territory, infrastructure and ammunition to Russian troops. But \u0141uka\u0161enka decided against sending Belarusian troops to Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian nuclear weapons deployed in Belarus are primarily “an instrument of defense” and Belarus would not use them on Russia’s orders, Alejnik is quoted as saying. However, any instruments may be used to defend the country\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity from invasion, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Ukraine and its people have become a pawn in the great game of the West to preserve its own global hegemony,” he said. “It\u2019s clear that by increasing weapons deliveries to this country, the West is determined to continue the war down to the last Ukrainian.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainians do not need “this war of attrition,” Alejnik said stressing that Belarus has always supported peace in Ukraine and will continue “to do everything in our power” to achieve it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The diplomat also denied the existence of political prisoners in Belarus. “All the people who are detained are detained for criminal charges which have been proved in the courts. And so that\u2019s it,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Human right groups say that Belarus has nearly 1,500 documented political prisoners, while the real number may be significantly higher. Most of them were imprisoned for taking part in 2020 peaceful protests against election fraud and for online comments critical of the government’s policy. Authorities in Belarus have equated criticism, solidarity, advocacy, the free media and free expression to extremism and terrorism.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
