September 26,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Belarus joined the Amendment to the Convention on the Physical Protection of Nuclear Material (CPPNM), becoming its 133rd signatory, the foreign ministry’s press office reports.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 25, Andrej Dapkiunas representing Belarus at the international organizations in Vienna, officially handed over the ratification papers to Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). \ufeff<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CPPNM and its amendment represent the only legally binding international instruments in the field of the physical protection of nuclear material, obliging signatories to protect nuclear facilities and material for domestic peaceful uses, storage and transport. \ufeff<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also regulates cooperation among states in taking prompt action to detect and recover stolen or smuggled nuclear material, mitigating sabotage consequences as well as preventing any related offenses. \ufeff<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vienna is hosting the IAEA General Conference from September 25 to 29. An official Belarusian delegation arrived with a presentation on the Belarusian nuclear power plant’s construction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Located near Astraviec, Hrodna region, some 10 miles off the Lithuanian border, the Belarusian NPP has been designed by Russia’s Rosatom and built with a Russian loan. Lithuania views the plant as unsafe and describes it as a “geopolitical weapon.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unit 1 started pilot operation in November 2020, and commercial operation, in June 2021. Unit 2 has been operating in a pilot mode since May 13. Its commercial operation is scheduled for October.
