{"id":2950,"date":"2023-09-22T21:12:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-22T18:12:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=2950"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"un-official-urges-probe-into-belarus-human-rights-violations","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/2950\/","title":{"rendered":"UN official urges probe into Belarus human rights violations"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>September 22,&nbsp;<em>Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong>&nbsp;UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif has&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/media.un.org\/en\/asset\/k15\/k15yeirubp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">called<\/a>&nbsp;for a &#8220;prompt, effective, thorough, independent, impartial and transparent investigations&#8221; into human rights violations in Belarus and for those responsible to be held accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Presenting updates to a spring report on the country&#8217;s human rights situation to the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva, she urged UN member states to use &#8220;national proceedings based on established principles of extraterritorial and universal jurisdiction&#8221; for the probe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belarus has tightened its grip on civil society in the last six months, the deputy high commissioner said. The human rights situation in the country remains bleak and shows no signs of improvement, three years after the disputed presidential election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;On the contrary, we are witnessing the further shrinking of civic space and continuing lack of respect for fundamental freedoms, evidenced by a campaign of violence and repression against individuals who oppose the government,&#8221; she&nbsp;said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She pointed to a &#8220;distressing pattern of arbitrary arrests and prosecutions on trumped-up charges, the targeting of various segments of society, including government critics, human rights defenders, journalists, academics, trade unions, religious figures, members of minorities, lawyers, and others who seek to exercise their fundamental rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;As of this month, September 2023, the Belarus&nbsp;authorities&#8217; crackdown on those critical or perceived to be critical of the government has resulted in over 3,750 individuals being convicted in criminal trials,&#8221; Al-Nashif said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Inside Belarus, 1,500 individuals are currently detained on charges that our office believes to be politically motivated. I am deeply concerned about the conditions of detention,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also expressed concern about torture and ill-treatment, &#8220;including beatings, overcrowding, sleep deprivation, denial of access to medical care, repeated solitary confinement, and unsafe or exploitative compulsory labor&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition, according to the UN official, those accused under &#8220;political&#8221; articles are subjected to &#8220;severe psychological violence, including death threats, rape threats, and sexually abusive comments.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al-Nashif expressed deep concern about reported deaths in detention: &#8220;I remind the government of its special responsibility for the safety and health of all persons in its custody, and call for thorough investigation of each and every such death, whatever the cause, to clearly establish the facts and circumstances to ensure the appropriate accountability and to enable measures to be put in place to avoid recurrence.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;The situation in Belarus has forced at least an estimated 300,000 persons to leave the country since May 2020, and the repression is increasingly extending beyond the borders of Belarus, targeting those who have already left,&#8221; the deputy high commissioner stressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She called on the Belarusian authorities to immediately release all political prisoners.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 22,&nbsp;Pozirk.&nbsp;UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif has&nbsp;called&nbsp;for a &#8220;prompt, effective, thorough, independent, impartial and transparent investigations&#8221; into human rights violations in Belarus and for those responsible to be held accountable.
