September 23,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0More than 20 Western European countries have supported a recent report presented by UN Deputy High Commissioner for Human Rights Nada Al-Nashif, the office of Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reprisals in Belarus have been condemned by the United States, Ukraine, Moldova, Lithuania and Estonia, as well as the European Union, an aide to Cichano\u016dskaja told BPN<\/em> yesterday, citing her counsel who heard Al-Nashif’s presentation. But Russia, China, North Korea and several other states have turned a blind eye to the abuses in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking in Geneva yesterday, the UN official called for an investigation into human rights violations in the country and for those responsible to be held accountable. She urged UN member states to use “national proceedings based on established principles of extraterritorial and universal jurisdiction” for the probe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarus has tightened its grip on civil society in the last six months, Al-Nashif said. The human rights situation in the country remains bleak and shows no signs of improvement, three years after the disputed presidential election.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
