September 28,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on September 27 with more people charged for sharing and reacting to government-critical content online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrested and released<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested at least five persons in the Va\u016dkavysk district, Hrodna region, for sharing opposition content, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 26, police also arrested nine people in Kareli\u010dy, Hrodna region, MAYDAY.TEAM reported. Rights groups linked the arrests to likes and reactions in messengers and social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested a man for the Long Live Belarus graffiti on the wall of a building on his private plot, a pro-government source said. Police reportedly found a white-red-white flag at his home during the search.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homiel-based cameraman Andrej To\u0142\u010dyn will spend three days in custody after being arrested for unclear reasons, the Homiel branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least one person was arrested after returning to Belarus from abroad for passport renewal, zerkalo.io reported siting Andrej Stry\u017eak of the BySol Foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities released Andrej Andreje\u016d after he had served a two-year prison term, Viasna said. Authorities persecuted him for allegedly threatening violence to police officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalla Ka\u0142baska and Iryna \u010ca\u010dotka were found guilty of sharing opposition content at a trial in Kareli\u010dy, Hrodna region, a Telegram channel monitoring politically-motivated persecution in Hrodna and the Hrodna region reported. Authorities have not disclosed the ruling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Or\u0161a, Viciebsk region, sentenced Volha Stabro\u016dskaja, 63, to 15 months in prison for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka on social media, Viasna said. The woman has a disability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pavie\u0142 Ho\u0142a\u016d from Hrodna, was sentenced to a prison term on charges of illegal handling of personal data and slander and released as he had already served the term while awaiting trial, Viasna said. Authorities persecuted him for a video where he talked about a conflict with his neighbors who serve as police officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 22, a judge in Baranavi\u010dy, Brest region, sentenced Ivan Norka, 65, to 18 months of restricted freedom in home confinement for a social media like that allegedly slandered \u0141uka\u0161enka, the Brest branch of Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

D\u017amitryj Sielviastruk, a sports blogger and former journalist with the state-run newspaper\u00a0Narodnaya Gazeta<\/em>, went on trial in Minsk on extremism-related charges,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volha Ra\u017avied\u010dykava and her husband D\u017amitryj are on trial in Minsk on charges of participating in 2020 protests, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 26, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal by the “Just World” Belarusian Party of the Left against the justice ministry’s refusal to re-register it,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>\u00a0reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The administration of Babrujsk Penal Colony No 2 in the Mahilo\u016d region stopped accepting parcels containing outerwear for inmates, forcing them to buy clothes at the colony, MAYDAY.TEAM reported. Starting in October, prison authorities are also restricting phone calls to one 15-minute long call to only one person every ten days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian national Tymur Postnov, held in the Mahilo\u016d pre-trial detention center, was denied a lawyer, MAYDAY.TEAM said. The man has been in custody since August 29.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extremism status update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Committee for State Security (KGB) blacklisted Zadzino\u010da\u0144nie Bie\u0142aruskich Studenta\u016d, a students\u2019 association, and Prague Support Team, a Czech initiative supporting Belarusians fighting Russia in Ukraine, as extremist groups. The interior ministry also blacklisted the Shklov 97% Telegram chat with 34 subscribers as extremist content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 28, human rights defenders identified at least 1,492 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
