September 29,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong>The opposition has disbursed\u00a0\u20ac104,000 of the \u20ac574,406 collected during the We Do Care! fundraiser held in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some of the funds have already been received by the families of political prisoners to pay lawyers’ fees, deliver parcels for penal colonies and pre-trial detention centers and support families, Volha Harbunova, the opposition United Transitional Cabinet’s (UTC) social policy representative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbunova told BPN<\/em> that she expected the funds to be distributed quicker, but there were no missed deadlines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We have collected many times more than we expected. When transferring funds beyond a certain amount, we should sign notarized contracts with foundations,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawyers and accountants are now working on compliance, she said. “In the future, the payment timeframe will be much shorter as soon as our work on fine-tuning the process, which has already been figured out, will yield results.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbunova went on to say that she fully trusts the organizations delivering cash to political prisoners’ families, and urged the public to be grateful for their work. None of the distributors of the funds cover their administrative costs from the donations, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“All funds are monitored by the oversight committee. Decisions on the distribution among the 12 funds and human rights initiatives are made by voting,” she added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harbunova went on to say that the main issue is the safety of the families, and the main goal is to help as many people as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We realize that the families of political prisoners have huge needs, that it is a heavy financial burden. Given that a lawyer’s day in Minsk costs over 500 rubels [about \u20ac200] and that there can be dozens of court hearings, a family needs significant support. In fact, the amount collected is one or two months of support for political prisoners,” she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She concluded by saying that an audit will be performed after all the funds have been distributed. The channels bringing the money into the country will not be revealed and the auditors will have to sign non-disclosure agreements, she said. They will be banned from taking snapshots or videos of the accounts. The public will only learn the auditors’ conclusions, not the names of the recipients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fundraiser took place on July 28-30. More than 20 independent media outlets participated in organizing and conducting the event, which was broadcast on their YouTube channels.\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>\u00a0was a media partner also.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
