September 29,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has allowed Belarusian and Russian athletes to participate in the 2024 Summer Paralympics under a neutral flag.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IPC General Assembly made the decision today in Bahrain, the Paralympic Movement said on X. It also voted for the partial suspension of the Russian and Belarusian national committees. As a result, Belarus has lost all rights to IPC membership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Paralympics will be held in Paris from August 28 to September 8 .<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian and Belarusian athletes did not compete in the 2022 Winter Paralympics in Beijing due to the full-scale war against Ukraine and the Belarusian government’s support for the Kremlin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November 2022, at an extraordinary meeting in Berlin, the IPC General Assembly also suspended the membership of Belarus and Russia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 30, Belarus’ Ministry of Labor and Social Security said that the suspension of the country’s membership ran counter to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 1, 2022, Belarusian Paralympic chief Mika\u0142aj \u0160udziejka said that Minsk had appealed the suspension to an IPC tribunal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In May 2023, it was announced that the tribunal had satisfied the respective complaints of Belarus and Russia, citing technicalities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 28, following the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board meeting, the IOC issued a statement advising international sports federations to allow Belarusians and Russians to participate in international competitions. At the same time, athletes could compete as neutrals only if they did not support the hostilities and had no contracts with the military or security services in their home countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sports officials have not yet decided whether to allow athletes from the two countries to compete in the Paris 2024 Summer Olympics, to be held from July 26 to August 11. Some in the international sports community are opposed to their participation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April, the IPC said that it will decide on the presence of Russia and Belarus at the 2024 Games independently. IPC President Andrew Parsons said that the committee’s position regarding the two countries has not changed. The IOC’s recommendation to international sports organizations does not apply to the Paralympic Movement, Parsons said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
