October 3,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>Belarusian human rights activists have declared about 2,700 people as political prisoners since May 2020, the Viasna center said in a report. The figure includes those who have already served their sentences, whose detention terms have been changed, or who have been released from punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Viasna, there were 1,490 political prisoners in Belarus at the end of September. Human rights organizations identified 36 new political prisoners during the month, while 30 political prisoners were released after serving their sentences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least 386 instances of politically-motivated prosecution, including 339 trials, were documented last month. Authorities held 79 people in detention for a total of 945 days under the Administrative Offenses Code, and fined 46 people a total of 34,743 rubels (about $10,500 at the current exchange rate).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ten people were declared political prisoners. They were prosecuted under a criminal article against disorderly conduct, which is often used to silence protesters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In more than 300 cases, authorities used a “classic repressive practice” of arresting people for allegedly disseminating extremist content, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The authorities also added 10 names to the list of “terrorists” and 183 names to the list of “extremists,” and declared seven communities to be “extremist groups.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Human rights defenders continue to document torture and other instances of cruel, inhumane and degrading treatment,” the report reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viasna also pointed out that last month, the Supreme Court dissolved the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) and the Just World Party of the Left.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
