October 4,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies yesterday called on D\u017amitryj \u0160a\u016dco\u016d to resign as secretary general of the Belarusian Red Cross by November 30.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the website of the international Red Cross, its governing board made the call after a compliance committee had investigated \u0160a\u016dco\u016d’s activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation stemmed from concerns about his visits to the Russian-occupied Ukrainian cities of Luhansk and Donetsk and comments about the displacement of Ukrainian children and the use of nuclear weapons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the BRC does not heed the call by November 30, its membership rights would be automatically suspended. It would be cut off from funding and deprived of voting rights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governing board also called for the “suspension of any new partnership and funding to the Belarusian Red Cross” if \u0160a\u016dco\u016d remains secretary general.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The investigation found that he was “solely responsible for all the allegations: his actions were carried out alone and not with the agreement of the national society,” according to the website. The board banned him from “holding any governance positions in the IFRC until further notice.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During one of his trips to the occupied part of Ukraine, \u0160a\u016dco\u016d told the state-run Belarus One<\/em> television channel that the BRC played a prominent role in the relocation of Ukrainian children for their “recuperation.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also appeared on the state-run ONT<\/em> television channel and suggested that Russia should consider launching nuclear strikes against Western countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Natalla Pin\u010duk, the wife of imprisoned Belarusian Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ale\u015b Bialacki, called on democratic nations to demand that the Red Cross put an end to the “illegal activities” of their Belarusian branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba called on the International Criminal Court to issue an arrest warrant for \u0160a\u016dco\u016d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On September 7, a Red Cross convention in Minsk unanimously reelected \u0160a\u016dco\u016d as secretary general for Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Also this year, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin and his children’s rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova, over alleged child deportations. Belarusian democratic forces are seeking a similar warrant for Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.
