It noted that inmates have the opportunity to study remotely, participate in sports competitions, and keep in touch with their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The inmates reportedly made no complaints about detention conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The commission included officials from the Prosecutor General&#8217;s Office, the regional prosecutor&#8217;s office, the interior ministry, as well as government-controlled monitoring groups affiliated with the Viciebsk regional government and the justice ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vi\u0107ba is known as an elite penal colony because of a high proportion of convicted high-ranking officials, prosecutors, judges and policemen held there. Yet, currently over 100 people convicted on politically-motivated charges are also serving their sentences there, Viasna noted. One of them is former&nbsp;<em>BelaPAN<\/em>&nbsp;CEO D\u017amitryj Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d serving a six-year prison term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In May, jailed opposition activist Mika\u0142aj Klimovi\u010d died at Vi\u0107ba of heart failure. Human rights defenders demanded an investigation, suspecting that he might have been denied proper medical care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People convicted for involvement in politics are forced to wear yellow tags and face tighter restrictions at Vi\u0107ba, human rights defender and former inmate Leanid Sudalenka told&nbsp;<em>BPN<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prison authorities deprived him of long-term visits from his family and allowed him to spend only 74 rubels ($23) per month at the prison store, while prison food was satisfactory, although it did not include any meat.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 4,\u00a0Pozirk.\u00a0A state-appointed commission has not found any violations during a recent inspection of the Penal Colony No 3 in Vi\u0107ba, Viciebsk region, the local branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.
