{"id":4213,"date":"2023-10-09T20:02:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T17:02:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=4213"},"modified":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","modified_gmt":"2026-03-09T20:10:49","slug":"european-union-council-of-europe-condemn-belarus-death-penalty-expansion","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/4213\/","title":{"rendered":"European Union, Council of Europe condemn Belarus death penalty expansion"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>October 9,\u00a0<em>Pozirk.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>The European Union and the Council of Europe have expressed their regret that Belarus has expanded\u00a0the application of the death penalty twice in less than a year, &#8220;this time to civil servants and military personnel for the crime of high treason.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The&nbsp;joint&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.consilium.europa.eu\/en\/press\/press-releases\/2023\/10\/09\/european-and-world-day-against-the-death-penalty-10-october-2023-joint-statement-by-the-secretary-general-of-the-council-of-europe-and-the-high-representative-on-behalf-of-the-european-union\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement<\/a>&nbsp;on the European and World Day Against the Death Penalty points out that&nbsp;Belarus remains the only country in Europe that still administers capital punishment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It stresses&nbsp;that more than two-thirds of the world&#8217;s countries have abolished this form of punishment &#8220;in either law or practice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We congratulate Zambia and Ghana for joining the worldwide abolitionist movement in the last year. We also welcome the record number of 125 votes in favour of the General Assembly resolution calling for a global moratorium on the use of the death penalty with a view towards its ultimate abolition. We call on those States, which still carry out death sentences to introduce a moratorium as a first step towards abolition,&#8221; the statement reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The EU and CoE note&nbsp;that the number of death sentences imposed and executions carried out in China last year &#8220;remained in the thousands&#8221; and increased in Iran and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;These countries, as well as other states such as Singapore, continue to disregard international human rights law by applying the death penalty in drug related cases, or even in cases where citizens express their opinions on social media or in the streets. The use of this inhuman punishment should be abandoned. We also regret that executions continued to be carried out in 2022 and 2023 in the United States,&#8221; the document reads.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On March 25, amendments to the Criminal Code of Belarus came into force, expanding the use of the death penalty. Article 356 provides for the execution of&nbsp;officials and&nbsp;military personnel&nbsp;for high treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The European and World Day Against the Death Penalty is observed on October
