{"id":43735,"date":"2022-09-14T17:57:17","date_gmt":"2022-09-14T14:57:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/reporter-gets-over-13-years-in-prison\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"reporter-gets-over-13-years-in-prison","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/43735\/","title":{"rendered":"Reporter gets over 13 years in prison"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>September 14, <span>BPN.<\/span><\/b> Judge Valeryj Ramano\u016dski of the Hrodna Regional Court has sentenced journalist Dzianis Iva\u0161yn to 13 years and 1 month in prison at a closed-door session, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n<p> The court ordered Iva\u0161yn to pay a fine of 4,800 rubels (about $1,900), as well as 2,000 rubels in non-pecuniary damages to each of the nine undisclosed victims. Therefore, he is expected to pay a total of 22,800 rubels.<\/p>\n<p> The reporter, declared a political prisoner by human rights activists, was prosecuted under criminal articles against meddling in police work and treason.<\/p>\n<p> Iva\u0161yn was a volunteer editor at Ukraine\u2019s <span>InfromNapalm<\/span>. He also cooperated with Belarus&#8217; independent weekly <span>Novy \u010cas<\/span>. He investigated Russian meddling in Belarus, construction at a Soviet-era massacre site, and the controversial recruitment of former Ukrainian riot police officers by Belarus.<\/p>\n<p> He was arrested on March 12, 2021. Later that month, the Committee for the State Security (KGB) claimed that he worked for Ukraine\u2019s special services and caused damage to Belarus&#8217; national security.<\/p>\n<p> The journalist went on trial on August 15, behind closed doors, as some details of his case supposedly amount&nbsp;to a state secret.<\/p>\n<p>According to the Belarusian Association of Journalists, 28 media workers remain behind bars.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 14, BPN.
