October 12, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on October 11 with more charges linked to opposition online activities and alleged insults of officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested Kaciaryna \u0160apava\u0142ava of the Belarusian State Philharmonic, Na\u0161a Niva<\/em> reported. In a police video, she admitted to participating in 2020 postelection protests and singing protest songs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Former university lecturer Ihar \u0160arucha from Mahilo\u016d may have been jailed for 15 days for sharing opposition content, MAYDAY.TEAM reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Viciebsk man is under arrest on similar charges, a pro-government Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police also arrested Alaksandar Mar\u010danka, a children’s biathlon coach from \u010cavusy, Mahilo\u016d region, for following opposition Telegram channels,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>\u00a0reported. The arrest is linked to an online chat with Juryj Komar, a truck driver widely believed to be a police informer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New criminal cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities filed extremism-related charges against Vital \u017duk, who left Belarus after his release from prison where he had served 18 months for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Hrodna sentenced Alaksandar Ju\u0161kievi\u010d to eight years in prison on charges of inciting hatred, Viasna said. He was a defendant in a case targeting Chernaya Kniga Belarusi (Eng.: Black Book of Belarus), an online project exposing the identities of security officers who mistreated and brutalized peaceful protesters in 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Do\u016dhal was convicted in Brest for allegedly insulting public officials and \u0141uka\u0161enka in two online comments on the Telegram messaging app, the Brest branch of Viasna said. The prosecutor requested 18 months in prison for a father of two but authorities did not disclose the verdict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jailed opposition activist \u0179micier Da\u0161kievi\u010d went on trial in Barysa\u016d, Minsk region, for allegedly disobeying prison authorities,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>\u00a0reported. He was taken into custody on July 11 when he was due to be released after serving an 18-month prison over protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u015aviat\u0142ana \u0141upa\u010d, daughter of the exiled journalist D\u017amitryj \u0141upa\u010d, will go on trial in Viciebsk on October 16 on charges of gross violations of public order, Viasna said. She has been in custody since early May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hienad\u017a \u017dukiel\u2019s trial will open in Lida, Hrodna region, on October 12, a Telegram channel monitoring politically-motivated persecution in Hrodna and the Hrodna region reported. Authorities accuse him of insulting \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian courts convicted at least 139 people for political reasons in September, Viasna reported. Of them, 54 people, including 22 women, were convicted of crimes. The others were convicted of minor offenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kiry\u0142 \u0160\u010dah\u0142o\u016d, 19, committed suicide in February after serving a prison term in a politically-motivated case, dissidentby reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian authorities violated international human rights law by imprisoning journalist Ihar \u0141osik for 15 years for his professional activities, the Freedom Now rights group reported citing the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inmates of the women’s penal colony No 4 in Homiel have no space to store fruits and vegetables from parcels that they are allowed in fall and winter, MAYDAY.TEAM said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of October 12, human rights defenders identified at least 1,488 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
