{"id":44318,"date":"2022-11-01T15:55:07","date_gmt":"2022-11-01T12:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/one-year-since-belapan-designated-extremist-group\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"one-year-since-belapan-designated-extremist-group","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/44318\/","title":{"rendered":"One year since BelaPAN designated extremist group"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n <b>November 1, <span>BPN<\/span>. <\/b>One year ago, <span>BelaPAN <\/span>was the first media outlet blacklisted by the authorities as an extremist group.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Interior ministry and the Committee for the State Security (KBB) added the private news agency to the extremist list that now features a total of ten media outlets, including <span>Belsat TV<\/span>, <span>Radio Svaboda<\/span>, <span>Na\u0161a Niva<\/span>, and <span>Euroradio<\/span>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n <span>BelaPAN\u2019s <\/span>entry was actually added on November 12, a week before its 30th anniversary. The editorial staff immediately suspended its operation to protect <span>BelaPAN <\/span>and <span>Naviny.by <\/span>journalists.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t By that time, <span>BelaPAN <\/span>editor in chief Iryna Le\u016d\u0161yna and former CEO D\u017amitryj Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d had been in custody for almost three months, and its former deputy head Andrej Alaksandra\u016d, for ten months.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Authorities brought the charge of creating and running an extremist group to charges of treason, tax evasion, and participating in protests against them.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t On October 6, a court in Minsk convicted Le\u016d\u0161yna of creating and running an extremist group and sentenced her to four years in prison; Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d was given four years for creating and running an extremist group of the aggregate six-year prison term, and Alaksandra\u016d, five years out of 14. It remains unclear, whether any other <span>BelaPAN <\/span>staff members were suspected or charged.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Inclusion of <span>BelaPAN <\/span>and other media outlets in the list of extremist groups is an attempt to cut off its audience, Barys Harecki, deputy chair of the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) told <span>BPN<\/span>, a news agency launched by some <span>BelaPAN <\/span>team members abroad.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t &#8220;Any group of people can be declared extremists, and it is impossible to appeal against this [decision],&#8221; he noted. That media policy helps make people more susceptible to propaganda, he said.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Nevertheless, independent media outlets continue working, with safety being their first priority as they have to protect their journalists and sources, Harecki said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>November 1, BPN.
