{"id":44359,"date":"2022-11-03T21:29:29","date_gmt":"2022-11-03T18:29:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/sentenced-belapan-journalists-taken-away-from-minsk-before-appeal-hearings\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"sentenced-belapan-journalists-taken-away-from-minsk-before-appeal-hearings","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/44359\/","title":{"rendered":"Sentenced BelaPAN journalists taken away from Minsk before appeal hearings"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>November 3, <span>BPN.<\/span><\/b> Police have transferred all of the BelaPAN case convicts to regional detention facilities.<\/p>\n<p> They placed Andrej Alaksandra\u016d and D\u017amitryj Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d in a jail in Viciebsk, and sent Iryna Le\u016d\u0161yna and Iryna Z\u0142obina to Homiel.<\/p>\n<p> On October 6, the Minsk Regional Court announced a guilty verdict on former executives of the BelaPAN media company.<\/p>\n<p> Judge Via\u010das\u0142a\u016d Tulejka sentenced CEO and editor in chief Iryna Le\u016d\u0161yna to four years in prison. The previous CEO, D\u017amitryj Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d, was given six years. Former deputy CEO Andrej Alaksandra\u016d would serve 14 years, and his wife Iryna Z\u0142obina \u2013 nine years.<\/p>\n<p> On top of that, the judge fined Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d 22,400 rubels (some $8,900), Z\u0142obina 25,600 rubels and Alaksandra\u016d 32,000 rubels.<\/p>\n<p> The defendants were accused of creating an extremist group (Alaksandra\u016d, Le\u016d\u0161yna, Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d), treason (Alaksandra\u016d, Z\u0142obina), tax evasion (Alaksandra\u016d, Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d), and organization of actions grossly disturbing public order (Alaksandra\u016d and Z\u0142obina). All four were recognized as political prisoners by human rights groups.<\/p>\n<p> On October 20, reports came through that the four appealed against the verdict.<\/p>\n<p>At least 32 journalists are in prison, the Belarusian Association of Journalists (BAJ) said.
