{"id":4458,"date":"2023-09-06T15:39:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-06T12:39:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=4458"},"modified":"2026-03-10T12:05:06","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T12:05:06","slug":"un-rapporteurs-concerned-about-belarus-religion-law-amendments","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/4458\/","title":{"rendered":"UN rapporteurs concerned about Belarus\u2019 religion law amendments"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>September 6,\u00a0<em>Pozirk<\/em>.\u00a0<\/strong>UN special rapporteurs have urged the Belarusian authorities to review a bill amending the religion law, <em>Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija<\/em> reported citing the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The bill was published for public discussion in June.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The UN rapporteurs on human rights and freedom of association and religion focused their strongest words on the proposed criminalization of unregistered religious organizations&#8217; activities in Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Registration should not be a prerequisite for the practice of religion, they stressed, noting that registration should be used only for congregations that seek legal status and associated benefits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The criminalization of unregistered activities would violate the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), ratified by Belarus in 1973, which protects the right to freedom of religion regardless of registration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The letter is also critical of the authorities\u2019 proposed expansion of powers to shut down religious organizations as well as of new restrictions on religious charitable activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UN Special Rapporteur on Belarus Ana\u00efs Marin; Cl\u00e9ment Nyaletsossi Voule, special rapporteur on freedom of peaceful assembly and of association; and Nazila Ghanea, special rapporteur on freedom of religion or belief, signed the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier, the bill drew fire from the Conference of Catholic Bishops of Belarus.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>September 6,\u00a0Pozirk.\u00a0UN special rapporteurs have urged the Belarusian authorities to review a bill amending the religion law, Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija reported citing the letter.
