September 6,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0Belarusian human rights groups have declared 15 more people political prisoners, bringing the total to 1,511, the Viasna Human Rights Center reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their charges ranged from public order offenses and insults against state officials to extremist funding and terrorism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The groups said the actions qualified by the authorities as terrorism did not fit the international definition of terrorism. They also said it was unacceptable to use the criminal law to silence critics of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, even if the language of their criticism was emotionally charged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Viasna center and the Barys Zvozska\u016d Human Rights House called for the release of these and other victims of repression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Political cases often go unreported, and opposition sources estimate the actual number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
