The move is also an attempt to put neighboring Poland and Lithuania under pressure and divide Belarusians, the aide to the Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Belarus passport, an identification document designed for Belarusian emigrants by the opposition, might not receive the status of a state passport, but it could certify the holder’s identity and could be used for travel and residence permit applications, Via\u010dorka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, samples are being printed out and the first passports may be issued in early 2024, he noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition transition cabinet plans to set up a passport office to accept applications via visa centers that assist in obtaining Schengen visas, he added. Every applicant would be subjected to a thorough verification procedure, he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition is currently working with the European Commission to ensure that the new passport meets all necessary security requirements, Via\u010dorka said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It will be impossible to forge it and \u0141uka\u0161enka will not be able to issue these documents in Minsk,” he stressed, noting that a reputable company will be awarded the contract to print the passports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The opposition will work towards achieving recognition of the ID at the political level, Cichano\u016dskaja’s aide noted. Two governments have already tentatively declared that they are ready to recognize it, he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
