September 7,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0The National Olympic Committees (NOCs) of the Baltic States do not approve participation of Belarusian and Russian athletes in international competitions, Daina Gudzinevi\u010di\u016bt\u0117, president of the Lithuanian NOC, told her counterparts from Latvia and Estonia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Russian and Belarusian athletes “have no place in the international sports movement” as long as Russia and its ally Belarus continue war on Ukraine and its people, says the statement signed by the heads of the three Baltic NOCs on September 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After the start of Russia\u2019s full-scale war on Ukraine in late February 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) called on the international sports federations not to allow athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete. That call was immediately answered on a mass scale and resulted in the almost complete isolation of Russian and Belarusian athletes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, in late March 2023, the IOC said that Belarusian and Russian athletes might be admitted to international competitions under a neutral flag on condition that they are not actively involved in supporting military operations and are not linked to the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several sports federations followed the IOC recommendation allowing Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutrals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late July, the IOC officially invited 203 national committees to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics, but would not extend invitations to Belarus, Russia and Guatemala. It is expected to make a decision on the participation of individual athletes from Russia and Belarus as neutrals.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
