{"id":4490,"date":"2023-09-12T11:37:00","date_gmt":"2023-09-12T08:37:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/?post_type=articles&#038;p=4490"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:40:57","slug":"update-on-arrests-trials-politically-motivated-persecution-43","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/4490\/","title":{"rendered":"Update on arrests, trials, politically-motivated persecution"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>September 12,\u00a0<em>Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on September 11 as authorities harassed dissenters and banned more opposition content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Arrested and released<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Minsk police arrested Pavie\u0142 Lipnievi\u010d, a mechanic, for allegedly writing over 600 comments in the Telegram messaging app,&nbsp;<em>Na\u0161a Niva&nbsp;<\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Police also arrested a 17-year-old teenager for an anti-Russian tattoo, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Raids and arrests continue at the Hrodna Azot fertilizer plant,&nbsp;<em>salidarnast.info<\/em>&nbsp;reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities released Alaksandar Junicki after he had served two years of restricted freedom in an open-type correctional facility on charges of insulting public officials, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vital Krysiukievi\u010d from Va\u016dkavysk, Hrodna region, was jailed for 10 days on charges of sharing opposition content, a Telegram channel monitoring politically-motivated persecution in Hrodna and the Hrodna region reported. Police reportedly found white-red-white symbols during a search at his home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>New criminal cases<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Investigative Committee said it opened a special-procedure case against current and former members of ByPol resistance group Alaksandar Azara\u016d, U\u0142adzimir \u017dyhar, Ma\u0107viej Kuprej\u010dyk, Ihar \u0141oban, Andrej Astapovi\u010d and Aleh Taler\u010dyk. They face over 10 criminal charges, ranging from incitement to hatred to terrorism and high treason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A judge in Minsk sentenced Andrej Ramanovi\u010d to two and a half years in prison on extremism-related charges for sharing footage of Belarusian military equipment movements with the opposition, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ja\u016dhienija Sava\u015bciejeva was given three years of restricted freedom in home confinement for participating in a 2020 protest rally, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former military officer D\u017amitryj Hulin went on trial in Minsk on six criminal charges, including insulting and slandering Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka, calling for sanctions and inciting hatred, Viasna reported.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extremist content update<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities blacklisted several Telegram channels as extremist content, including Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija, a group that monitors reprisals against Christians in Belarus as well as Dapamoha, a public organization that helps Belarusians integrate in Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Committee for State Security (KGB) blacklisted the Atolino Telegram chat as an &#8220;extremist&#8221; group, the interior ministry reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Authorities transferred jailed opposition activist Ihar \u0160umi\u0142a\u016d to Penal Colony No. 17 in \u0160k\u0142o\u016d, Viasna said. He is currently serving a four-and-a-half-year prison term for posting four government-critical drawings on Odnoklassniki. He has a disability after losing a leg in a traffic accident ten years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hienad\u017a Ma\u017eejka, a former journalist with&nbsp;<em>Komsomolskaya Pravda v Belarusi<\/em>, was transferred to a penal colony in the Viciebsk region to serve three years in prison. He had been convicted of inciting hatred and insulting Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of September 12, human rights defenders identified at least 1,517 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented.
