{"id":45051,"date":"2022-12-23T21:00:39","date_gmt":"2022-12-23T18:00:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/media-freedom-coalition-demands-that-charges-against-arrested-journalist-be-dropped\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"media-freedom-coalition-demands-that-charges-against-arrested-journalist-be-dropped","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/45051\/","title":{"rendered":"Media Freedom Coalition demands that charges against arrested journalist be dropped"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>December 23, <span>BPN.<\/span><\/b> The Media Freedom Coalition demanded that all charges against former Belarusian journalist \u0141arysa \u0160\u010dyrakova be dropped and that she be released.<\/p>\n<p> \u0160\u010dyrakova should be allowed to reunite with her son and exercise the right to freedom of expression, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands, a coalition member, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p> The statement was backed by the Canadian human rights office.<\/p>\n<p> Previously, the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe\u2019s media freedom representative Teresa Ribeiro called on the Belarusian authorities to release the dissident.<\/p>\n<p> The state accused \u0160\u010dyrakova, a former journalist based in Homiel, of discrediting Belarus, her family told <span>BPN<\/span>. She may face up to four years in prison, if convicted.<\/p>\n<p> Police arrested \u0160\u010dyrakova on December 6 and took her 15-year-old son Sviatas\u0142a\u016d to the Homiel district social service center. She had stopped working as journalist in 2021, and was into ethnographic photography in the last few months before her arrest.<\/p>\n<p> Belarus has dozens of imprisoned reporters, says the Belarusian Association of Journalists.<\/p>\n<p>The Media Freedom Coalition was formed in 2019.
