The year 2022 turned out to be even more difficult and tragic than the previous one. Thirty-three media workers are behind bars, including three of our colleagues: Iryna Le\u016d\u0161yna, D\u017amitryj Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d and Andrej Alaksandra\u016d. December 30 was the 500th day of Iryna\u2019s and \u0179micier\u2019s detention. Andrej\u2019s \u201ccounter\u201d passed the 700 mark.<\/p>\n
Three colleagues \u2013 and three sixes, like the damned highway in the famous \u201cRoute 666\u201d film.<\/p>\n
On June 6, the trial began.<\/p>\n
On October 6, the verdict was announced.<\/p>\n
On January 6, an appeal will be heard.<\/p>\n
The outcome is not difficult to predict.<\/p>\n
But no-one (so far) knows what portion of their sentences \u2013 four years for Le\u016d\u0161yna, six years for Nava\u017ey\u0142a\u016d and 14 years for Alaksandra\u016d \u2013 they will actually complete. It is the optimism pervading their every letter that charges us, those outside prison walls, with energy.<\/p>\n
The critical era continues. It is crucial that we live through it together.<\/p>\n
