Arrested and released<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police in Brest arrested Alaksandar Kazak, a bar owner, for sharing opposition content on social media, Mediazona<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A supermarket cashier was arrested in Brest for following opposition Telegram channels, a pro-government Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An accountant is under arrest in Mahilo\u016d for following and sharing opposition content on social media, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A beauty parlor owner in Mahilo\u016d was fined 3,700 rubles ($1,127) over her white-red-white manicure, Mediazona<\/em> reported. Police reportedly found white-red-white and Ukrainian flags during the search at her home as well as pictures from 2020 protests on her smartphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mechanic Siarhiej Maciuk from the Viciebsk region’s Miory district was jailed for five days on charges of sharing opposition content on the Telegram messaging app, the Viciebsk branch of Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksiej Ivana\u016d was jailed in Or\u0161a, Viciebsk region, for seven days on similar charges over an Instagram post, the Vitebsk, ja gulayu!<\/em> Telegram channel said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anton Bubo\u0142a, 81, will go on trial in Vierchniad\u017avinsk, Viciebsk region, the same Telegram channel said. Authorities accuse the local history researcher and former inmate of the Nazi concentration camp of sharing opposition content. Three other defendants in the same case are Natalla \u0141akotka, Valeryj Turonak and Anatol Selivon\u010dyk. In January, authorities fined Bubo\u0142a 740 ($225) rubels on similar charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities released Viktoryja Navickaja after she had served a prison term on protest-related charges, activist Ja\u016dhienija Do\u016dhaja said on Facebook. Naviskaja’s brother, Jan Mielnika\u016d, is currently fighting Russia in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Kruh\u0142aje, Mahilo\u016d region, sentenced Alina Horava and Alesia Fryhina to 18 months of restricted freedom in home confinement over 2020 protests, and Pavie\u0142 Ta\u0142ana\u016d, to two years, Viasna reported. Horava had been sentenced to one year of restricted freedom in home confinement on similar charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Siarhiej Mickievic, 60, was given two years of restricted freedom in home confinement and a fine of 3,700 rubles ($1,127) for allegedly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka online, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Mahilo\u016d sentenced Alaksandar Nikana\u016d to two years in prison over a like on Odnoklassniki which authorities interpreted as slandering and insulting \u0141uka\u0161enka, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Homiel prison authorities refuse to accept parcels for jailed opposition activist Palina \u0160arenda-Panasiuk who needs a special diet after a hunger strike, Radyjo Svaboda<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extremist list update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The interior ministry added 18 more people to the list of “persons involved in extremist activities,” taking their total to 3,268, its website said. The additions include lawyer Alaksandar Danilevi\u010d and journalist Ja\u016dhien Mierkis. Both are currently serving lengthy prison terms on extremism-related charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

New political prisoners<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian human rights activists labeled ten more people as political prisoners, including trade unionists Volha Brycikava, Alaksandar Ba\u0142onkin and Alaksandar Kucharonak, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 9, human rights defenders identified at least 1,519 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
