{"id":45198,"date":"2023-01-05T12:02:11","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T09:02:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/nobel-prize-winner-bialacki-associates-on-trial-in-minsk\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"nobel-prize-winner-bialacki-associates-on-trial-in-minsk","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/45198\/","title":{"rendered":"Nobel Prize winner Bialacki, associates on trial in Minsk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n <b>January 5, <span>BPN<\/span>.<\/b> The trial of Viasna Human Rights Center leader Ale\u015b Bialacki and his associates Valancin Stefanovi\u010d and U\u0142adzimir \u0141abkovi\u010d has opened at the Leninski District Court in Minsk.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Human rights defender \u0179micier Sa\u0142a\u016djo\u016d, who has fled the country, is tried in absentia as part of the same case.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The investigators accused human rights defenders of smuggling cash across the border and financing protests but the case is widely regarded as politically motivated.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Judge Maryna Zapa\u015bnik, known for convicting regime critics, presides over the proceedings.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t In an interview with <span>SB.by<\/span>, Investigative Committee Deputy Chairman Anatol Vasille\u016d described Viasna as a \u201cquasi-rights center\u201d focused on monetary gain rather than advocacy.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Bialacki, Stefanovi\u010d and \u0141abkovi\u010d were arrested in July 2021 on tax evasion charges. The charges were dropped in September 2022, only to be followed by accusations of smuggling.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Last October, Bialacki won the Nobel Peace Prize together with human rights organizations Memorial, Russia, and Center for Civil Liberties, Ukraine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 5, BPN.
