September 9,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0The Baltic States need a joint plan to respond to possible attacks at the\u00a0border\u00a0with Belarus and Russia, Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis has told Latvian journalists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He described Russia and Belarus as unpredictable and dangerous neighbors, noting the arrival of Wagner Group mercenaries in Belarus. “Anything can happen and we must be ready for it,” Delfi<\/em> reported<\/a> citing him as saying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landsbergis called for a common regional solution to address potential threats to national security, which could include coordinated restrictions on cross-border traffic and the closure of border checkpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 28, interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States agreed on criteria to close their borders with Belarus. These include an armed incident or other serious incidents threatening their national security, as well as a surge in illegal migration from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few days later, Lithuanian President Gitanas Naus\u0117da said that the potential closure of borders with Belarus was losing its relevance as the situation with Wagner fighters was stabilizing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In late June, Wagner chief Yevgeny Prigozhin called for an armed rebellion to oust the Russian defense minister, but later backed down after reaching agreements with Belarusian ruler Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wagner fighters have been regularly arriving in Belarus since mid-July. Their numbers were estimated to be between 3,500 and 5,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The defense monitoring team, Bie\u0142aruski Hajun, said on September 8 that some of them might have left Belarus following the death of their leader in a plane crash in late August.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
