{"id":45226,"date":"2023-01-06T23:34:51","date_gmt":"2023-01-06T20:34:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/amnesty-international-calls-viasna-hearings-shameful-pretense-of-a-trial\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"amnesty-international-calls-viasna-hearings-shameful-pretense-of-a-trial","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/45226\/","title":{"rendered":"Amnesty International calls Viasna hearings \u201cshameful pretense of a trial\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>January 6, <span>BPN.<\/span><\/b> Amnesty International has criticized the trial of Belarusian human rights activist Ale\u015b Bialacki and his associates Valancin Stefanovi\u010d, U\u0142adzimir \u0141abkovi\u010d and \u0179micier Sa\u0142a\u016djo\u016d, describing it as unjust and shameful.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe trial against Ale\u015b Bialacki and his fellow human rights defenders is a blatant act of injustice wherein the state is clearly seeking to enact revenge for their activism,\u201d Amnesty International\u2019s Eastern Europe director Marie Struthers said, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org\/en\/latest\/news\/2023\/01\/belarus-trial-against-nobel-peace-prize-laureate-ales-bialiatski-a-shameful-pretense-of-justice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">quoted<\/a> by the NGO\u2019s website on January 5. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cIn this shameful pretense of a trial, the defendants cannot even hope for a semblance of justice. The judge has not only refused to conduct the trial in Belarusian instead of Russian, but also to remove their handcuffs or adjourn the hearing so the defendants can familiarize themselves with the case materials,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p> The trial opened on January 5 at the Leninski District Court in Minsk. Authorities accuse the Nobel Peace Prize winner Bialacki of smuggling cash across the border and financing protests. The head of the Viasna Human Rights Center sits in the dock with Stefanovi\u010d and \u0141abkovi\u010d, while Sa\u0142a\u016djo\u016d, who has fled the country, is tried in absentia.<\/p>\n<p>Amnesty International demanded that the arrested activists should be immediately released.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 6, BPN.
