{"id":45366,"date":"2023-01-17T18:07:54","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T15:07:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/usa-imposes-visa-sanctions-on-25-belarusian-officials\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"usa-imposes-visa-sanctions-on-25-belarusian-officials","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/45366\/","title":{"rendered":"USA imposes visa sanctions on 25 Belarusian officials"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>January 17, <span>BPN.<\/span><\/b> The US Department of State says it has imposed visa restrictions on 25 Belarusian officials&nbsp;for undermining democracy.<\/p>\n<p> The list includes members of the National Assembly who played a role in passing legislation to endorse the death penalty for those convicted of alleged \u201cattempted acts of terrorism.\u201d The department said some of those sanctioned also supported legislation to strip of citizenship and property the \u00e9migr\u00e9s accused of \u201cextremism\u201d for \u201cunfriendly actions towards Belarus.\u201d The law was meant to intimidate the democratic opposition and civil society, it added.<\/p>\n<p> Secretary of State Antony Blinken said&nbsp;that a total of 322 Belarusian nationals have fallen under visa sanctions since 2020. This was a reaction to the regime\u2019s policy to suppress the people and its democratic aspirations, including through the politically motivated trial in absentia of opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja and other activists, he said.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThese politically motivated trials are the latest examples of the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime\u2019s efforts to intimidate and repress those who seek justice, respect for human rights, and a democratic Belarus,\u201d he said. \u201cMs Cichano\u016dskaja leads the pro-democracy movement from exile in Vilnius, defends human rights, and continues to press for a democratic transition in Belarus. She is on trial along with other pro-democracy leaders.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> He noted that courts have sentenced in absentia Belarusian Sports Solidarity Foundation (BSSF) founder Alaksandr Apiejkin and Olympic swimmer Alaksandra Hierasimenia to 12 years in prison. The \u0141uka\u0161enka regime also continued to hold Nobel Peace Prize laureate Ale\u015b Bialacki as a political prisoner, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will not stand by as this regime continues to harass and repress peaceful protesters, the democratic opposition, journalists, unionists, activists, human rights defenders, and everyday Belarusians\u2026 We will continue to use all appropriate tools to hold to account those in Belarus standing in the way of their fellow citizens\u2019 democratic aspirations,\u201d Blinken added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 17, BPN.
