{"id":45372,"date":"2023-01-18T01:01:11","date_gmt":"2023-01-17T22:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/eu-condemns-political-trials-in-belarus\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"eu-condemns-political-trials-in-belarus","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/45372\/","title":{"rendered":"EU condemns political trials in Belarus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>January 18, <span>BPN.<\/span><\/b> \u201cThe European Union will continue to support all the brave women and men striving for a free, democratic and independent Belarus,\u201d the EU\u2019s top diplomat Josep Borrell said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/belarus-statement-high-representative-josep-borrell-trials-against-opposition-leaders-and_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement<\/a> on the start of new political trials in Minsk, issued on January 17.<\/p>\n<p> Borrell stated that \u201ctrials in absentia against leaders of the democratic opposition, \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja and Pavie\u0142 \u0141atu\u0161ka, and against three other members of the Coordination Council\u201d began yesterday, demonstrating that the regime continues to misuse the judiciary for political purposes.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThey are facing fabricated charges of treason, extremism, conspiracy and incitement to hatred and are risking up to 20 years of prison just for trying to exercise their democratic rights,\u201d he added. \u201cThe start of these trials comes after similar steps by the regime against Nobel prize winner Ale\u015b Bialacki last week and a journalist and member of the board of independent Union of Poles of Belarus, Andrzej Poczobut.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> Political reprisals have reached an unprecedented level in the republic, the statement reads: \u201cThere are now more than 1,440 political prisoners.
