{"id":45396,"date":"2023-01-19T15:50:31","date_gmt":"2023-01-19T12:50:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/opposition-leader-asks-switzerland-to-facilitate-release-of-belarusian-political-prisoners\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"opposition-leader-asks-switzerland-to-facilitate-release-of-belarusian-political-prisoners","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/45396\/","title":{"rendered":"Opposition leader asks Switzerland to facilitate release of Belarusian political prisoners"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n <b>January 19, <span>BPN<\/span>.<\/b> Belarusian opposition leader Sviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja asked Martin Candinas, president of the Swiss National Council, for assistance in securing the release of Belarusian political prisoners.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t In February 2022, Switzerland persuaded Minsk to release Natalla Hersche, a Belarus-born Swiss national imprisoned on politically-motivated charges.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Cichano\u016dskaja also asked Switzerland to help Belarusians persecuted in politically-motivated cases and to consider joining sanctions against Belarusian officials and police officers responsible for human rights abuses and supporting the war in Ukraine.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The politicians also discussed establishing a parliamentary group of friends of Belarus in the Swiss parliament.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Cichano\u016dskaja discussed possible support for Belarusian projects with Pawe\u0142 Sur\u00f3wka, CEO of Poland\u2019s Eurocash. These projects would focus on victims of human rights abuses and Belarusian volunteers fighting Russia in Ukraine, the politician&#8217;s office told <span>BPN<\/span>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The opposition leader briefly met Kyiv&#8217;s mayor Vitali Klitschko and thanked him for renaming one of Kyiv&#8217;s streets after Belarusian 19th-century hero Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski, she tweeted.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t On the sidelines of the World Economic Forum, Cichano\u016dskaja also met Moldovan President Maia Sandu, Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo as well as Gilbert Houngbo, head of the International Labor Organization.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>January 19, BPN.
