{"id":45818,"date":"2023-02-22T21:20:33","date_gmt":"2023-02-22T18:20:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/kgb-reports-spike-in-western-intelligence-efforts-requests-tougher-legislation\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"kgb-reports-spike-in-western-intelligence-efforts-requests-tougher-legislation","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/45818\/","title":{"rendered":"KGB reports spike in Western intelligence efforts, requests tougher legislation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>February 22, <span>BPN.<\/span><\/b> The Committee for State Security (KGB) observes a spike in anti-Belarusian activity by all kinds of the collective West\u2019s intelligence services, KGB Chairman Ivan Tertel has told the Council of the Republic.<\/p>\n<p> The state media reports that he presented to members of the upper house a bill \u201cOn Amending Criminal Statutes,\u201d which, among other things, provides for imposing the death penalty for high treason (Article 356 of the Criminal Code) on officials and military personnel.<\/p>\n<p> \u201cThe main focus is recruitment work on persons who can obtain classified information, recruitment of law-enforcement officers and members of the state apparatus,\u201d Tertel said, describing the alleged spy efforts. \u201cTaking into account foreign special services\u2019 aggressive activities to penetrate law-enforcement agencies and the state apparatus (by the way, the KGB has detained more than 10 traitors since the beginning of the year) and significant damage to national interests, the situation requires adopting comprehensive measures to neutralize these threats.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> According to him, the current version of Article 356 of the Criminal Code \u201cdoes not cover all potentially vulnerable categories of state servants,\u201d so \u201cwe suggest expanding the increased liability to [\u2026] all authorities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> \u201cIn addition, we suggest toughening the punishment for state treason to include even the death penalty,\u201d he continued. \u201cImplemented in exceptional cases, this capital measure will become a serious deterrent for potential traitors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p> The Council of the Republic approved the bill. It is now to be signed by Alaksandr \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n<p>Belarus is the only country in Europe where the death penalty continues to be applied. Abolition of the death penalty was put to a referendum in 1996.
