{"id":46921,"date":"2023-05-20T14:55:33","date_gmt":"2023-05-20T11:55:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/illegal-belarus-eu-border-crossings-soar-to-197-in-24-hours\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"illegal-belarus-eu-border-crossings-soar-to-197-in-24-hours","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/46921\/","title":{"rendered":"Illegal Belarus-EU border crossings soar to 197 in 24 hours"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n\t<b>May 20, <span>BPN<\/span>. <\/b>The European Union has not allowed at least 197 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service <a href=\"https:\/\/vsat.lrv.lt\/lt\/naujienos\/neileistu-neteisetu-migrantu-statistika\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">reported<\/a> that it foiled 20 attempts in the Lithuanian-Belarusian border area on May 19, while their Latvian colleagues thwarted 91 attempts.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The Polish Border Guard <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Straz_Graniczna\/status\/1659809292210384898\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">said<\/a> that 86 foreigners, including nationals of Somalia and Ethiopia, tried to illegally cross the border from Belarus.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Since the start of 2023, the EU has recorded at least 13,809 attempts by illegal migrants to enter its territory from Belarus, with 9,503 attempts via Poland, 3,244 via Latvia and 1,062 via Lithuania. Illegal migrants attempted to cross the Belarus-EU border 3,009 times since the start of May.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Border crossing attempts rose from 1,989 and 2,034 in January and February to 3,401 and 3,440 in March and April, respectively.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border dates back to the spring of 2021. It escalated in November 2021 when thousands of migrants set up a camp near the Polish border. The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Migration figures had dropped significantly by the time Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but have risen more recently. Poland has been leading as the main destination for illegal migrants in 2023.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 20, BPN.
