{"id":46971,"date":"2023-05-24T13:31:42","date_gmt":"2023-05-24T10:31:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/belarus-authorities-may-use-pratasievics-pardon-for-propaganda-reporters-without-borders\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"belarus-authorities-may-use-pratasievics-pardon-for-propaganda-reporters-without-borders","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/46971\/","title":{"rendered":"Belarus\u2019 authorities may use Pratasievi\u010d\u2019s pardon for propaganda \u2013 Reporters Without Borders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n <b>May 24, <span>BPN<\/span>.<\/b> &#8220;Raman Pratasievi\u010d\u2019s pardon seems to be the epilogue to a vast masquerade that the [Alaksandr] \u0141uka\u0161enka government has been staging for the past two years,&#8221; said Jeanne Cavelier, head of RSF\u2019s Eastern Europe and Central Asia desk commenting on the prominent journalist&#8217;s predicament.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Authorities keep using the journalist for propaganda purposes and his future remains uncertain, she noted.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Pratasievi\u010d\u2019s pardon should not overshadow the manipulation of his arrest by the authorities, RSF said noting that his appearance reflects the &#8220;ordeal he has undergone since his dramatic arrest&#8221; two years ago and the intense psychological pressure that he was subjected to.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t &#8220;We are waiting to see whether he has recovered his freedom of movement and will be able to leave the country,&#8221; Cavelier said noting that 33 journalists still remain behind bars in Belarus.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t On May 3, the Minsk Regional Court sentenced Pratasievi\u010d, 27, to eight years in prison, branding his work as extremism and a threat to national security. His pardon was announced on May 22.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The EU-based <span>Nexta<\/span> founder, \u015aciapan Puci\u0142a, and journalist Jan Rudzik were given 20 and 19 years in prison, respectively, without the defendants being present.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Raman Pratasievi\u010d and Russian national Sofya Sapega were arrested after the forced landing of a Ryanair flight in Minsk in 2021. Pratasievi\u010d remained under house arrest as he &#8220;fully complied with the terms of his pre-trial cooperation agreement.&#8221; He pleaded guilty at the trial.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Belarusian authorities hunted him down because they considered his&nbsp;<span>Nexta<\/span> media outlet responsible for the political unrest that followed the disputed presidential election in 2020.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t In May 2022, the Hrodna Regional Court sentenced Sapega to six years in prison.
