{"id":46999,"date":"2023-05-25T21:59:33","date_gmt":"2023-05-25T18:59:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/eu-to-monitor-russia-belarus-nuclear-weapons-deal\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"eu-to-monitor-russia-belarus-nuclear-weapons-deal","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/46999\/","title":{"rendered":"EU to monitor Russia-Belarus nuclear weapons deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>May 25, <span>BPN.<\/span><\/b> The European Union (EU) has said that it will closely watch how Russia and Belarus carry out their agreement to deploy Russian nuclear weapons on Belarusian soil.<\/p>\n<p> The statement&nbsp;comes as Russian and Belarusian defense chiefs signed the terms of&nbsp;operation of a storage facility for tactical nukes in the former Soviet republic.<\/p>\n<p> EU spokesman Peter Stano told reporters in Brussels that the signing was a provocative move that increased tensions and did not help de-escalate the situation.<\/p>\n<p> He pointed out Belarus\u2019 \u201ccooperation and collaboration\u201d in Russia\u2019s \u201cillegal aggression\u201d against Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p> He said the EU will react \u201cas appropriate\u201d to the implementation of the nuclear weapons plan by Minsk and Moscow.<\/p>\n<p> Belarus has been known as a non-nuclear state since the 1990s, when it gave up its Soviet-era nuclear weapons and joined a nonproliferation treaty.<\/p>\n<p> In March, Vladimir Putin announced that Russia was planning to deploy nuclear weapons in Belarus, pointing to the United States having them in several partner countries.<\/p>\n<p> Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja condemned the plan, saying it violated the country\u2019s non-nuclear status and threatened the security of Ukraine and Europe.<\/p>\n<p>She said it was necessary to thwart the plan that would ensure \u201cRussia\u2019s control over Belarus for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>May 25, BPN.
