{"id":47021,"date":"2023-05-27T14:00:48","date_gmt":"2023-05-27T11:00:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/eu-condemns-russias-nuclear-deployment-citing-1990s-memorandum\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"eu-condemns-russias-nuclear-deployment-citing-1990s-memorandum","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/47021\/","title":{"rendered":"EU condemns Russia\u2019s nuclear deployment citing 1990s memorandum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>May 27, <span>BPN.<\/span><\/b> The European Union\u2019s foreign policy chief has condemned Russia\u2019s move to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus as dangerous and escalatory.<\/p>\n<p> Josep Borrell said yesterday that it contradicted&nbsp;Russia\u2019s commitments under the Budapest Memorandum, the deal by which it and others promised to respect Belarus\u2019 independence after the country&nbsp;had pledged to give up its nuclear arsenal.<\/p>\n<p> Borrell also recalled that Russia had signed an international statement last year affirming that \u201ca nuclear war cannot be won and must never be fought.\u201d <\/p>\n<p> \u201cWe call on Belarusian authorities to put an immediate end to their support of Russia&#8217;s war of aggression against Ukraine, and reverse decisions that can only contribute to heightening tensions in the region, and undermine Belarus\u2019 sovereignty,\u201d Borrell said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/belarus-statement-high-representative-announced-transfer-russian-nuclear-warheads-belarus_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p> \u201cAny attempt to further escalate the situation will be met by a strong and coordinated reaction,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p> Minsk gave up its Soviet-era nuclear weapons and joined an international nonproliferation treaty in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p> However, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced in March that Russia was planning to deploy nuclear arms in Belarus, pointing out that&nbsp;the United States has&nbsp;them in several allied countries.<\/p>\n<p>Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed this week that Moscow alone would control the weapons and decide on their use.
