{"id":47057,"date":"2023-05-30T19:22:06","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T16:22:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/expert-nukes-in-belarus-make-nato-strike-more-likely\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"expert-nukes-in-belarus-make-nato-strike-more-likely","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/47057\/","title":{"rendered":"Expert: nukes in Belarus make NATO strike more likely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><b>May 30, <span>BPN.<\/span> <\/b>A Ukrainian military expert has warned that NATO will have to plan for a preemptive strike on a nuclear weapons storage site in Belarus if the country\u2019s authoritarian leader allows Russia to deploy such arms there. <\/p>\n<p> Oleh Zhdanov told <span>24 Kanal<\/span> TV that tactical nuclear weapons are meant to break through enemy defenses and are not useful for defensive purposes. <\/p>\n<p> He said hosting them would make Belarus a de facto part of Russia\u2019s military and could force it to adopt the Russian ruble as its currency. <\/p>\n<p> Minsk gave up its Soviet-era nuclear weapons and joined an international nonproliferation treaty in the 1990s.<\/p>\n<p> However, Putin announced in March that Russia was planning to deploy nuclear arms in Belarus, pointing out that the United States has them in several allied countries.<\/p>\n<p>Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu claimed last week that Moscow alone would control the weapons and decide on their use.
