{"id":47619,"date":"2023-07-12T17:35:18","date_gmt":"2023-07-12T14:35:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/api.pozirk.online\/articles\/human-rights-defenders-urge-authorities-to-investigate-prominent-artists-death\/"},"modified":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","modified_gmt":"2026-02-24T20:29:13","slug":"human-rights-defenders-urge-authorities-to-investigate-prominent-artists-death","status":"publish","type":"articles","link":"https:\/\/pozirk.online\/en\/news\/47619\/","title":{"rendered":"Human rights defenders urge authorities to investigate prominent artist\u2019s death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n <b>July 12,&nbsp;<span>BPN<\/span>.<\/b>&nbsp;Belarusian human rights groups have issued a joint statement to urge the authorities to launch an investigation into the death of jailed prominent artist Ale\u015b Pushkin.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The statement comes amid reports that Pushkin died because he did not receive timely medical treatment for perforated ulcer.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The Viasna Human Rights Center and its partners, citing prisoners\u2019 accounts and recent deaths of inmates in similar circumstances, accused authorities of deliberately denying proper care to some inmates to exert pressure, condemning the practice as cruel and inhuman treatment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The human rights defenders also expressed concern about lengthy disruptions in correspondence with some prisoners, including prominent political figures.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The statement accuses Minsk of failure to respect and protect inmates\u2019 basic right to life.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t The statement has been signed by Belarusian PEN, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, Lawtrend, the Zvozka\u016d Belarusian Human Rights House, Pravavaja Inicyjatyva and several other groups.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t According to&nbsp;<span>MOST<\/span>, the unconscious Pu\u0161kin was taken to a hospital yesterday, where he died on an operating table.\n<\/p>\n<p>\n\t Pushkin is not the first documented political prisoner to pass&nbsp;away. In May 2021, activist Vitold A\u0161urak died at&nbsp;the Mahilo\u016d region&#8217;s penal colony under unclear circumstances. Two years later, activist and blogger Mika\u0142aj Klimovi\u010d died at&nbsp;the Viciebsk region&#8217;s penal colony of heart failure. He had a heart condition that required constant medical care.<\/p>\n<p>\t Pu\u0161kin&nbsp;was serving a five-year sentence for insulting state symbols and inciting hatred, after investigators seized his painting of Ja\u016dhien \u017dychar, a commander of an anti-Soviet resistance group in the 1940-50s, and nationally-styled items.<\/p>\n<p>\t His family has already received the body,&nbsp;<span>Radyjo Svaboda<\/span>&nbsp;reported.
