November 7, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 176 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service did not record illegal border crossings for a week but said<\/a> their Latvian colleagues thwarted 56 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish Border Guard said<\/a> that 120 foreigners, including nationals of Yemen, Syria, Somalia, Eritrea and Ethiopia, tried to illegally cross the border from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2023, the EU has recorded at least 39,510 attempts by illegal migrants to enter its territory from Belarus, with 24,143 attempts via Poland, 13,175 via Latvia and 2,192 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated but steady tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout the year. Illegal border crossings peaked at 5,474 in October, exceeding the previous record high of 5,054 in July. In November, illegal migrants attempted to cross the Belarusian-EU border as many as 812 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border dates back to the spring of 2021. It escalated in November 2021, with thousands of migrants setting up a camp near the Polish border. The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Migration figures had dropped significantly by the time Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but have risen more recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 28, interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States agreed to close their borders with Belarus in case of a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
