October 13,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0The Russian language is “not Russia’s language” – it is a “common asset,” Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka said at the summit of the Commonwealth of Independent States in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u0141uka\u0161enka’s press office quoted him as saying that Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s initiative to create an international organization for the Russian language was “very timely and in demand.” The Belarusian ruler said that many young people in the CIS “speak Russian worse than English or other languages.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We can get to the point where we communicate through an interpreter. We cannot lose the language of interethnic communication, as they call it. And I do not understand at all why it should be lost. Does it harm us, our generation? No. It should not harm our children’s generation either,” \u0141uka\u0161enka said, calling the knowledge of Russian “the greatest asset.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on to say that not only Russians and Belarusians contributed to the Russian language, but also Azerbaijanis, Uzbeks, Tajiks and others who lived “in one state for a long time.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In this regard, he said he was “pleased with the trend in Central Asian countries, including Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan, where new schools and universities are emerging where the Russian language is studied and taught.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On October 10, \u0141uka\u0161enka approved the draft agreement on the establishment of the International Organization for the Russian Language. It is scheduled to be signed today at the end of the CIS summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While promoting the Russian language, the government in Minsk shows no interest in popularizing the Belarusian language. For decades, its development was the prerogative of public initiatives and organizations, which the \u0141uka\u0161enka regime dissolved or pushed out of Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country pursues an apparent policy of Russification. According to a census, the number of Belarusians who consider Belarusian their mother tongue has fallen from 85.6 percent in 1999 to 61.2 percent in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Formally, 40 percent of schools are Belarusian-language, but only about 10 percent of the country’s students, just over 100,000, study there.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
