November 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> Belarusian opposition will not recognize the “regime’s fake elections planned for 2024” and will urge all democratic countries to do the same, Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja said on X<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“With political parties dismantled, leaders jailed or exiled, this is nothing more than a charade,” she noted. “Belarus needs true democracy, not this spectacle staged by the regime.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her statement comes amid reports of French charg\u00e9 d\u2019affaires Ludovic Royer’s meetings with the leaders of the Communist Party of Belarus and the Republican Party of Labor and Justice. The diplomat reportedly inquired them about their plans ahead of the 2024 parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both parties were recently granted re-registration along with two other parties of Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka\u2019s supporters. All four are considered to be pro-government. In the summer and fall, authorities disbanded 10 opposition or inert alliances as \u0141uka\u0161enka sought to purge the political landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 17, the French embassy’s Telegram channel also reposted content by Pul Pervogo<\/em>, the unofficial Telegram channel of \u0141uka\u0161enka’s press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

France did not officially recognize \u0141uka\u0161enka as president and has consistently supported Belarus\u2019 pro-democracy forces and sanctions against Belarusian officials and companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both parliamentary and local elections in Belarus are scheduled for February 25, 2024 under a new election law.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
