November 18, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> The European Union (EU) has not allowed at least 42 migrants to enter illegally from Belarus over the past day, the lowest number recorded since the start of the fall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lithuanian State Border Guard Service did not register any border violations but said <\/a>their Latvian colleagues thwarted 16 attempts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polish Border Guard said<\/a> that 26 foreigners tried to illegally cross the border from Belarus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since the start of 2023, the EU has recorded at least 40,775 attempts by illegal migrants to enter its territory from Belarus, with 24,799 attempts via Poland, 13,547 via Latvia and 2,429 via Lithuania.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pozirk<\/em>‘s analysis of daily stats indicated fluctuated but steady tension at the Belarusian-EU border throughout the year. Illegal border crossings peaked at 5,474 in October, exceeding the previous record high of 5,054 in July. In November, illegal migrants attempted to cross the Belarusian-EU border as many as 2,077 times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The migration crisis at the Belarusian-EU border dates back to the spring of 2021. It escalated in November 2021, with thousands of migrants setting up a camp near the Polish border. The Baltic states and Poland accused Belarusian authorities of creating the trouble, while the latter blamed it on the West.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Migration figures had dropped significantly by the time Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, but have risen more recently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On August 28, interior ministers of Poland and the Baltic States agreed to close their borders with Belarus in case of a surge in illegal migration.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
