November 28, Pozirk. <\/em><\/strong>Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja offered assistance to the Latvian authorities in vetting Belarusian nationals entering Latvia by car, Rus.LSM.lv <\/em>reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over the past three years, the opposition developed a vetting system that can help governments and special services verify anyone who leaves Belarus, she noted, urging the European partners to cooperate on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Riga is still considering a ban on cars with Belarusian license plates over threats to national security, she noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The politician stressed the importance of distinguishing between the Belarusian authorities and ordinary Belarusians for whom foreign trips and the possibility of obtaining a Latvian visa may be the only way to flee politically-motivated persecution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We can help with the verification of people who enter [Latvia] or receive visas,” Cichano\u016dskaja said. “But we ask not to restrict the exit [from Belarus] of people who may risk their lives if banned from foreign travel.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 2, Latvian MPs passed amendments to the traffic law requiring the owners of cars with Russian license plates to obtain Latvian registration no later than February 14, or to take their vehicles out of Latvia. Otherwise, the cars will be confiscated and handed over to Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally, the bill also applied to vehicles with Belarusian license plates. However, the parliamentary committee on national economy removed this restriction supported by Latvia\u2019s justice ministry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 27, Cichano\u016dskaja thanked Lat\u00advian Prime Minister Evika Sili\u0146a for Riga\u2019s decision not to force owners of cars with Belarusian license plates to re-register them in Latvia or leave the country.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
