September 13,\u00a0Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong>\u00a0New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on September 12 with more opposition content blacklisted and six people added to the authorities\u2019 terrorist register.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested a student of the Belarusian State Academy of Communications for allegedly sharing opposition content, a pro-government source said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trials<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Miory, Viciebsk region, fined Protestant priest D\u017amitryj \u0160aviako\u016d 740 rubrels (about $230) for alleged unauthorized access to electronic data, the Viciebsk branch of the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Viktar (other sources name him U\u0142adzimir) Mialecha\u016d was given two and a half years in prison on August 25 in Ivanava, Brest region, Viasna said. Authorities accused him of insulting public officials and illegal trafficking of narcotic drugs. In April, he had been tried in Minsk on similar charges and sentenced to four years of restricted freedom in an open-type correctional facility and a fine of 7,400 rubels ($2,300).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Musician Alaksiej Ku\u017amin went on trial in a politically-motivated case in Minsk on September 11, Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extremist content update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities blacklisted the Za Va\u0161u i Na\u0161u Svabodu\/Rerum Novarum<\/em> Telegram channel and a channel by Belarusians in Moscow as extremist content, according to the information ministry’s website. Other blacklisted content includes the Chry\u015bcijanskaja Vizija<\/em> and Narodny Opros<\/em> social media as well as several Instagram accounts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Belarusian Committee for State Security (KGB) added six more people to its list of terrorists, including three political prisoners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Detention conditions<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities transferred jailed trade unionist Alaksandar Jara\u0161uk from a penal colony to a prison in Mahilo\u016d, Viasna reported. He is currently serving a four-year prison term. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of September 13, human rights defenders identified at least 1,517 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
