September 13,\u00a0Pozirk.<\/em>\u00a0<\/strong>The European Parliament (EP) will continue to back Belarusian democratic forces and “play an active role in shaping the European Union’s response to the ongoing political crisis in Belarus,” the parliament’s president has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Roberta Metsola told lawmakers in Strasbourg that “the people of Belarus must be able to live in freedom. Free from autocracy. Free from oppression.” “It is critical that we further expand European Union sanctions against the regime and do not lose sight of what they have done,” she said, as quoted<\/a> by the EP press office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Belarusian opposition leader \u015aviat\u0142ana Cichano\u016dskaja also addressed<\/a> the lawmakers before the EP adopted a report on EU relations with her country, calling on the Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka regime to release political prisoners and denouncing Minsk’s role in the war against Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEPs voiced great concern about the “political, economic, military and cultural subordination of Belarus to Moscow, rendering the country a de-facto satellite state hosting tactical nuclear weapons under Russian command.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

MEPs also called for tougher sanctions on Minsk, stressing that the presence of Wagner mercenaries on Belarusian territory poses a security threat to Ukraine and other neighboring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
