December 14, Pozirk<\/em>.<\/strong> New cases of politically-motivated persecution were documented in Belarus on December 13 with more charges linked to 2020 protests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arrests<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Police arrested a young man in Salihorsk, Minsk region, the Viasna Human Rights Center reported.  In a police video, he admitted to criticizing authorities online and participating in 2020 postelection protests when he was 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Criminal proceedings<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Alaksandar Kuliko\u016d went on a new trial in Mahilo\u016d on December 6, Viasna said. He was arrested in June upon his return from Poland and sentenced to three years in prison for online comments. Now authorities accuse him of attempts to join the Kastu\u015b Kalino\u016dski Regiment fighting Russia in Ukraine and training to carry out extremist activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 24, a judge in Minsk sentenced Andrej Barano\u016dski to two and a half years of restricted freedom in home confinement for participation in a 2020 protest rally, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

U\u0142adzimir \u0141ukjan\u010duk was given one year in prison on charges of publicly insulting Alaksandar \u0141uka\u0161enka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 11, a judge in Minsk sentenced D\u017amitryj and Volha Jemieljana\u016d to three years of restricted freedom in home confinement over 2020 protests, Viasna reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Extremist” content update<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On December 11, authorities blacklisted the Legalize Belarus<\/em> social media as extremist content, Viasna said. Other banned content includes Irkutsk Anarkhistskiy<\/em> (DIAna) Telegram channel and channels and chats by Belarusians in Georgia’s Batumi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other instances of persecution<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A judge in Hrodna dissolved a Lithuanian minority organization comprising 400 members in Rymdziuny, Hrodna region, Hrodna.life<\/em> reported. It cooperated with authorities and the Lithuanian embassy in Belarus since 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 28, authorities seized a land plot from Vadzim Saran\u010duko\u016d, acting chair of the outlawed Belarusian Popular Front party, he said on Facebook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Authorities also seized a land plot from prominent human rights defender Leanid Sudalenka under the pretext of new criminal charges of facilitating extremism, the Homiel branch of Viasna said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On November 16, jailed Rabo\u010dy Ruch activist Uladzimir \u017dura\u016dka was transferred to an internal prison at Homiel’s Penal Colony No 2, MAYDAY TEAM said. He is serving a 15-year prison term on charges widely seen as politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As of December 14, human rights defenders identified at least 1,472 political prisoners but the real number is considerably higher because many cases go undocumented. Opposition sources estimate the number of political prisoners at around 5,000.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
